Catalunya juega con el dos

De hecho, todos los pueblos son binarios. Hay una tendencia a que una generación humana vire hacia cierto progresismo o expansión, seguida de otra de signo opuesto, más conservador. Sístole y diástole, cambio de polaridad en la transmisión de la civilización. Ya lo vimos con España, pueblo con ciclos de tres generaciones.

Catalunya es distinta. Funciona con potencias numéricas de 2. Tiene un ciclo conservador, dócil (el seny), seguido de uno más desatado (la rauxa). En ese segundo periodo suele tirar por la calle del medio y hacerlo todo sin permiso. Sin embargo, sigue manteniendo una estructura interna en el desarrollo de una generación: puntos clave en cierto momento preciso. Veámoslo.

Las tripas de lo catalán

Tomemos por ejemplo el periodo llamado democrático en Catalunya. En el post anterior, señalamos que la detención de los 113 miembros de la Asamblea de Catalunya marcó una diferencia en la manera de hacer política. Esto desembocó (tras un proceso político de 7 años) en la aprobación del primer Estatuto de Autonomía de la región y sus primeras elecciones en 1980.

2 años más tarde y para contener una tendencia que se extendía por todo el estado español, se promulgó la LOAPA (Ley Orgánica de Armonización del Proceso Autonómico). Hay que destacar que, desde 1980 y superponiéndose a lo anterior, se inicia el periodo que se llamó ‘pujolismo’. Este periodo llega hasta 2003, con un punto de inflexión en 1992 (justo en la mitad del periodo).

Ese año fue la culminación, la última mayoría absoluta de Pujol como presidente. El año olímpico. A partir de ahí, la colaboración con partidos estatales en los gobiernos de España y otros temas marcan un cambio de tendencia que acaba en 2003, como decíamos, año en que triunfa el Tripartito de izquierdas.

Desde ese momento, se inicia una etapa de 7 años, ocupado en la larga tarea de reformar el Estatuto de Autonomía. Tras la rebaja en origen, el recorte previo, el pacto con el Estado para que fuera posible debatirlo, su nuevo recorte y el recurso al recorte, simplemente se invalidó por la vía del Tribunal Constitucional. Ese es el punto sin retorno, momento en que se fundó la Asamblea Nacional Catalana.

¿No me creen?

El ser humano es gregario, forma grupos con diferentes intereses. Estos grupos encuentran líderes, formales o de hecho, que los conducen.

El problema es que las personas declinan y envejecen, por lo que deben dejar paso a nuevos líderes más jóvenes que renueven su papel; así, estos nuevos «conductores» aportan nuevos objetivos, intereses, preferencias, prioridades, influencias externas… pero manteniendo algo en común con todos los anteriores.

Todo esto altera el equilibrio de los grupos, cambiando el reparto de poder y su potencia para llevar a cabo sus objetivos, por tanto algunos se ven beneficiados y otros perjudicados. En ambos casos, los beneficiados querrán utilizar ese excedente de poder mientras que los perjudicados querrán recuperar o mantener todo el que tenían anteriormente. Hay un plazo necesario para recuperar el equilibrio; tiempo que, sostenemos, es sorprendentemente fijo. Por pura observación.

Una vez establecido el nuevo equilibrio, los proyectos colectivos se desarrollan en pulsaciones por lo general fijas, con puntos concretos más destacados.

• Estas pulsaciones son de unos 4 años (¿por qué, si no, las legislaturas son de 4 años?)
• Los puntos especiales caen a menudo en posiciones correspondientes a números primos de la serie de 38 años. Ya hablamos de ello al describir el ciclo español.
• Hay una progresión matemática que describe parte del interior del ciclo. Vamos a hablar de ello en seguida.

El esquema general

Describamos un proceso generacional, por ejemplo el inmediatamente anterior al que ya ha empezado:

1973          Detención de los miembros de la Assamblea de Catalunya (38=0)

En este caso observamos una simetría con dos periodos de 19 años en el entorno de 1992. En los extremos tenemos, como ya hemos mencionado con anterioridad, periodos de 7 años. Pero si uno revisa el periodo completo y conoce la historia de estos tiempos, puede ver una progresión geométrica: Si = ∑(n+1), aproximadamente.

Esta es una serie muy conocida y elemental. Deriva de la serie Si = ∑n. Esta es la serie de los números triangulares (habría preferido la de Fibonacci), para la cual Gauss dio una fórmula válida hasta el valor 4095 (por tanto, dentro de nuestro rango de números)= 2exp(k) – 1.

Ya que le sumamos una unidad a todos los elementos de la serie, obtenemos otra alternativa basada en potencias de 2. ¿Qué significa? Nada mágico, desde luego, pero nos da un patrón de crecimiento. Eso es lo importante.

En conclusión

A partir de la progresión, veremos que los movimientos políticos y sociológicos funcionan aquí en saltos de 2, 4, 8, 16 y 32 generaciones. Invitamos al lector a volver al post anterior a este y comprobar lo que decimos a partir de la tabla allí expuesta.

Retrocediendo en la historia:

• dos generaciones han transcurrido desde que se suspendió la autonomía catalana durante el año y se acabó barriendo con ella.
• cuatro generaciones desde el ascenso de Prim en la guerra de Marruecos, los liberales, el federalismo y la primera república.
• ocho generaciones desde la batalla de Almansa y el enfrentamiento directo con los Borbones.
• dieciséis generaciones desde que murió el rey Martí I y se terminó la dinastía de Barcelona. Es el inicio de la integración con los reinos peninsulares.
• treinta y dos generaciones desde que se fundara el Condado de Barcelona y la Marca Hispánica.

EXACTAMENTE. No puede ser casual. Es por esto que consideramos este punto actual de la historia de este pequeño rincón de Europa, como el inicio de algo de gran alcance. El detalle del mismo es cosa de los que lo protagonicen.

Catalonia plays the 2 game

In fact, every people is binary. There’s a trend to any human generation to alternate between progressive (or expansive) and conservative (shrinking) movement. Diastolic and sistolic movement, polarity shift in the transmision of civilization. We already saw this when talking about Spain, a people with three-generation cycles.

Catalonia works different, by using numerical powers of 2. It has a conservative submissive cycle, let’s call it using the traditional catalan word ‘seny’ (good sense). This is followed by an unleashed period (in the local language, ‘rauxa’), in which the take decisions without asking for permision. However, they keep an internal time structure in the developement of every single generation: that is, key points at certain moment. Let’s look at it.

Taking out the works of Catalonia

Let’s look at a specific generation: what is currently known as democratic period. In the last post, we spoke about the arrest of 113 members from the Catalonia Assembly (anti-Franco’s catalan resistance movement). This fact was the milestone of a new way to face politics, catalan politics. As a result, after a 7-year process, the Autonomous legal code was approved in the region, so it was posible to celebrate the first regional elections in 1980.
2 years later, a wave of autonomous awakening crossed Spain. In order to restrain it, central government passed a bill called LOAPA (Ley Orgánica de Armonización del Proceso Autonómico – a law to balance the autonomous process, more or less).

Let me tell you that a significant period started from 1980 on, overlaping to the already described wave of autonomous blooming. It was called ‘pujolisme’ because they named it after Jordi Pujol, president of the autonomous institution until 2003, with a turning point after 1992 (just in the middle of the period).

That year meant a summit, The last absolute majority he obtained in an election. Also, the olimpic year. But from then on, cooperation with spanish state parties (PP and PSOE) to provide them stable majority for the central government starts a decaying trend that ends in  2003, as pointed. That year won the election a three-party leftist coalition.

After this moment, another 7-years stage was busy with the task of reforming the Autonomy Law, or ‘Estatut’. First, they shrinked their ambitions in the original project, then they made a previous cut to help the spanish congress accept it. Then, a new negotiation was held to start the debate in Madrid, followed by a new cut, and finally it was killed by a appealing to the Constitutional Court, known to be partisan. That was the point of no return driving to the foundation of the Catalan National Assembly.

Can’t believe it?

Human being have a herd instinct. They form groups of interests. Those groups find leaders, formal or ‘de facto’, who lead them.
But the problem is, these leaders decline and grow old, so making way to new and younger leaders who play the same role. Nevertheless, these new «drivers» carry new goals, interests, agenda, external influences… but always having something in common with all the previous ones.

All this changes the balance of forces within the groups and among them, by making a different distribution of power and its capacity to carry out their goals, and so doing some groups are rewarded while others are harmed or penalized. In both cases, extra power is quickly taken advantage of, while the groups harmed make movements to recover or keep part of the lost one.

There’s a time necessary to restore a stable equilibrium, a time we state is surprisingly precise. We know it by pure observation.

Once recovered a new balance, collective projects develop in pulses, generally fix, with key points at certain moments.

These pulses last about 4 years (why, if not, are legislatures 4 years long?)
Special points often fall in positions usually corresponding with prime numbers within the 38-year long series. We have alredy spoken about that when describing the spanish cycle.
There’s also a mathematical progression describing part of the cycle. We are going to talk about it very soon.

General schedule

Let’s describe a generational process, for instance the previous one to the period that has just started:

In this case, we observe a simmetry with two periods of 19 years around 1992. At both extremes, as already mentioned, we find periods of 7 years. But, if you revise the complete cycle and know the history of these times, then you can find also a geometric progression: Si = ∑(n+1), approximately.
That’s a very well and elementary series. Derives from Si = ∑n. This is the series of triangular numbers (I would have prefered Fibonacci’s). For this one, Gauss gave a valid formula until value 4095 (so, within our range of numbers)= 2exp(k) – 1.
By adding one unity to all membres of the series, we obtain another alternative based on powers of 2. What does it mean? Nothing magical, of course, but a pattern of growth. That’s what is important to remark.

Conclusion

From this progression, we’ll see that political and sociological movements work in leaps of 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 generations. We invite the reader to come back to the previous post and check what we presented in the table there exposed.

Travelling back through history:
two generations passed since autonomy was suspended at the end of 1934 and during one year, to finally make a clean sweep with it.
four generations since the rise of general Prim en the Africa war, catalan liberals, federalism and the first republic (mostly catalan inspired).
eight generations since the batte of Almansa and direct confrontation with Borbons.
sixteen generations since the death of king Martí I and the end of Barcelona’s dinasty. That’s the beginning of integration of peninsular kingdoms.
thirty-two generations since the foundation of the County of Barcelona and the Spanish March.
EXACTLY. Too many cases to be coincidences. That’s why we consider this point in the present history of this small corner of Europe, as the beginning of a long ranging event. The details about it depend on the people who play the leading role.
